A Fine Umbrella

East towards the Caribbean Sea, under protection of a fine umbrella we lounge, poolside. A drink at tableside, a book in hand, warm sunshine and a light breeze making for a lazy afternoon in the rooftop pool at Condominiums A-Nah, Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

When we had decided to winter-over in Playa, Kathey promptly found us a condo in A-Nah using Airbnb.com. A local businessman named, Augustine Flores, owns our particular condo. He owns more than the one at A-Nah and several others in the city. February is high season for North Americans and Europeans who flock to the tropics, escaping their cold winter months.

Being from California we don’t get much sympathy until we tell others—mostly Canadians—that we come from Northern California and it has been plenty cold there. They soften a little, but only as a politeness.

Airbnb has been getting bad press lately over a few issues that have occurred for people using their website to find the perfect place for a getaway. I suppose those folks fell into the “dodo occurs” category (a very small percentage). And, too, I suppose the hotel chains and their industry have leaped on those issues to sully the nascent short-term rental home business.

But, our experience has been marvelous. Yes, we did the usual reference checks on Tripadvisor and Googled Las Flores Properties. We even checked it out on Google Earth, only to find that A-Nah was too new and not shown in satellite view. With a few more clicks though, we did find it in Google’s street view.

Using any of the reputable websites does simplify the process of finding a nice place, in your budget, and where you plan to vacation. To ensure you have a great time, go the few extra steps and check around for confirmation of your choice before plunking down a deposit.
